Sony Music Entertainment is one of the "Big Three" record companies, with Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. A Subsidiary to Sony and operated under Sony Corporation of America. Being such a large company the label has many record labels covering a vast array of genres from Dance/Electronic with Ultra Records to Christian/Gospel with Kingdom Life Records.

Having so many record labels under their operation, Sony Music invests in many music videos, with varied budgets depending on the artist. When making a music video most music videos are directed by an experienced director who has been in behind the camera of many music videos in all types of genres. For example Ultra Records has had David Guetta's Titanium music videos directed by David Wilson who has previously worked on music videos for Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala.

Being part of the big three means, Sony Music video is one of the three biggest music conglomerates in the world. Sony Music is a conglomerate through having an umbrella of record labels making it a holding company that invests into these labels to produce content. Statistics suggest that the "big three" are in control of 60-70% of the United States Music Market.

Out of the big three, Sony Music is seen as middle size compared to the other two, with Universal Music Group the biggest. The idea of a big three has not been the same throughout the 20th century and 21st century. From 2004 to 2012 EMI was seen as one of the big four however since their defunct as a company the big four has become the big 2. Sony Music was first seen as a major record label in 1999, since then the company has artist under its wing such as Beyoncé, Daft Punk, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and Katy Perry.
