What Is The Purpose Of A Music Video?

There are many purposes to a music video for example promoting a song. However other music videos carry different purposes, for example to promote a certain event for example La La La by Shakira is to promote the World Cup.

The main purpose that every music video holds is to promote the song and make people remember the song. Music Video has become far more abstract and wants a shock value so audiences remember the song (And hopefully buy the song.). For example Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball bought huge attention through the music video showing Miley completely naked on a wrecking ball. Many artist do these "shock value" music videos to be different from a convetional music video; consisting and focusing on the song more than the skin.

Many music videos are also created to show off the artist in a different way other than singing. For example many Chris Brown songs show the artist dancing for example Loyal which see's Chris Brown pull off some incredible dance moves that the song cannot show. Another example of a music showing a different side to an artist is Cheers (Drink to That) by Rihanna, showing the artist backstage and on a day off from recording and performing music. Many artists do that to let the fans see what their idols really like, the audience can sometimes connect with the artist and become an even bigger fan.

Many songs have hidden meaning that the audience might have a small understanding about or no understanding at all, music video can help give the listener a greater understanding of the music video. For example, Sane Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert wanted to show the true problems behind people keeping their sexuality secret, visuals of crying are very difficult or even impossible to truly show. Music videos give these visuals which gives the audience greatest possible understanding of the song.

Music videos are created primarily to promote the song, with Music channels such as MTV, VH1 and radio stations such as Capital FM and Kiss FM having TV Channels. BY having music videos artists are able to advertise their new materials to the viewers at home almost like an advert, enabling a boost in sales and media coverage. Some music videos take advertisement from other companies (Some with no music relevance) to make extra money for example I Need A Doctor by Dr. Dre feat. Eminem, Skylar Grey has a montage of a Ferrari almost set out like an advert that last longer than normal.
