On 1st August 1981, Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles was the first music video to be broadcasted on MTV. Since then MTV has given artist of all genres the opportunity to have their latest music videos put on the TV channel. This made music video far more worth making as the song could be promoted to the millions viewers at home watching and make them go out to buy it.

Since the creation of MTV in 1981, the conglomerate giant has opened new channels such as MTV Rocks and MTV Dance to specific genres and enables audiences to watch/listen to their favourite artists. By having this channel, audience are able to listen to the best current artist in chart shows. MTV is a great way to advertise new music as the audiences will see the music video during the shows and during advert breaks see's adverts on the new albums by artist, and hopefully go out or online and buy the song/album.

MTV works with artist in making shows for example rising R&B star Miguel has a show title Miguel's R&B 20. This show has the artist count his favourite songs of his genre (Or what inspired him.). Younger audience can feel more attached to the artist when they say a current song the audience knows. This can boost viewing figures for MTV and sales for the artist.

Studies show that "targets audiences between the ages of twelve and thirty-four, with a median age of twenty-three; an age group which has proven highly elusive for other media", this will appeal to record labels as they have a large audience to promote too, which can be difficult to get if you are a upcoming artist.

The music videos don't only promote the latest music, but also the latest information about fashion and cosmetics, lifestyles, and social roles and behaviour. For example #Selfie by Chainsmokers gives the latest lifestyle youth are stereotyped to have. Although it’s not true for all, many people will see these videos and want to be like them. Although many music videos reflect the current lifestyle the music video's target audience.

Since MTV high success, other music channels have been created for certain genres and decades. Many radio Stations such as Captial FM, Kiss FM and Kerrang have all TV Channel which they promote the music they play on the radio for example Kerrang specialises in Rock. MTV will surly expand further too and keep playing the latest songs.

MTV is good research in finding out how music videos can help artists and what platforms there are that can help an artist become big in the world. MTV enables artists to get their music and style across the audiences, but this can only be done through the music video. Meaning its important to get the right message and idea across to the audience, as a music video can be a first impression on the artist for many people through MTV and YouTube, and make them decide if they want to see more content from this artist.
