Turn Down for What has one of the strangest music video I have ever seen. The song is by DJ Snake with vocals by Lil John and was released in 2013. The music video is what makes the song as famous as it went viral on YouTube. John Newham describes the song best as a “perfect insanity”. The music video does carry a narrative (Sort off); with one man dancing uncontrollably and gathers other dancers like the moves are like a virus claiming victims. However the dance moves are not at conventional and more painful than anything seen. By having such unconventional elements this helped the video become famous for two artists who are not major stars.

The narrative is useful for my music video through being so original and has no real connection with song except how crazy it is. Although my music video is far darker from this, the video helps in showing how the rhythm and beat of the song can make a song so good without having to really connect with the lyrics. My music video does carry a link to the lyrics but I do have flexibility to show the song in different ways.

The music video setting is in a small block of flats and connotes how a music video does not have to be made in incredible locations or settings. Instead places that are more common can be used. Just like my music video which is done in Belmont Downs, nothing too fancy. Plus the song does not have any lip syncing to the song but does follow the beat of the song through its cuts. This demonstrates how the music video does need to follow some aspects of the song otherwise if lip syncing and cutting between shots is not done, and then the music video does not connect with the audience.

The music video demonstrates like all other music videos how it can be helpful in promotional purposes. Through the music video going viral on YouTube Lil John has featured on more songs with more well-known artists and DJ Snake has helped produce many songs too. The music video shows their style of craziness and through the song going viral; record companies recognise that they need to use these artists to gain sales.

In conclusion, this music video is a perfect example in how a music video can help an artist in self-promotion. Through the song going viral, the artists have been able to make bigger tracks with bigger artists; all this through a music video that doesn’t have much meaning but humour. This music video helps in my research by showing how a good music video can be made without having to stick to close to the song and how flexible you can be in making a crazy video that will get peope interested.
