“The Kuleshov Effect is a film editing (montage) effect demonstrated by Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the 1910s and 1920s.It is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation.”

In my music video I will be attempting to use the Kuleshov Effect just before the suicide scene. The scene see the character find a place in the forest that is isolated and he’s sit down leaning on a tree. During this sequence I keep going to a shot of my face showing hardly any emotion in my face. This shot is meant to be the shot that which viewers derive more meaning from whilst watching the one shot of me sitting down which is difficult in trying to pursue emotion in such a simple action. I thought of this editing technique after watching 2001: A Space Odyssey which uses this technique in the final part Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite. The scene show Dave Bowman going into an Alien world but his face is completely blank whilst these weird and unconventional effects take place; this is done so the audience connotes the emotions Dave is feeling. I’m hoping to do this in my music video successfully as it solves parts of the issue on my bad acting.
